Influence of Tree Canopy Coverage and Leaf Area Density on Urban Heat Island Mitigation

چکیده

Urban heat islands (UHI) are a widely documented phenomenon that adversely increases urban overheating and, among other effects, contributes to heat-related mortalities and morbidities in areas. Consequently, comprehensive UHI-mitigating measures essential for improving microclimate environments contributing salutogenic design practices. This study proposed cooling strategies involving different tree percentages leaf area densities dense during the summertime Korea. The effects of sixteen various combinations scenarios based on common types were studied via in-situ field measurements numerical modeling, considering both vegetated exposed It was observed by changing characteristics density (LAD) per plant our base area—for instance, from 4% trees 60% trees, low LAD high LAD—the daily average maximum temperatures reduced approximately 3 °C 5.23 °C, respectively. obtained results demonstrate usefulness mitigate heating, they particularly useful designers policymakers their efforts minimize UHI effects.

Roles of Urban Tree Canopy and Buildings in Urban Heat Island Effects: Parameterization and Preliminary Results

Urban heat island (UHI) effects can strengthen heat waves and air pollution episodes. In this study, the dampening impact of urban trees on the UHI during an extreme heat wave in the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland, metropolitan area is examined by incorporating trees, soil, and grass into the coupled Weather Research and Forecasting model and an urban canopy model (WRF-UCM). By param...

The urban heat island Mitigation Impact Screening Tool (MIST)

A web-based screening tool has been developed to assist urban planners and air quality management officials in assessing the potential of urban heat island mitigation strategies to affect the urban climate, ozone air quality, and energy consumption within their cities. The user of the screening tool can select from any of over 200 US cities for which to conduct the analysis. The mitigation stra...

The mitigation effect of configuration and context optimization of urban holdings on heat island

The urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon has become a serious problem in recent years. It is necessary to study the mitigation methods and quantify their effects on UHI. In this paper, based on the remote sensed data, an empirical model was established as a negative function of land surface temperature (LST) to vegetation coverage. Urban heat island intensity (UHII) was estimated by a robust stat...

Urban Heat Island

We are all familiar with the fact that cities are generally warmer than the surrounding, more rural areas. We see it referenced most nights in our television weather reports. It is especially significant on nights with clear skies and light winds which favor radiational cooling. This is most significant in the rural areas but in the city, the excess heat absorbed during the day and the local he...
